Build a Career in Welding

Learn essential concepts and acquire valuable experience in welding.

Welders are employed by manufacturing, fabrication, maintenance and construction companies. They are important to ensure the safety of the infrastructure in communities by repairing and rebuilding bridges, highways, buildings and more.

Because of new government regulations and personal safety requirements that dictate stricter codes, trained welders are required. Also, more products have emerged requiring certified and qualified welders.

The Welding Advanced Certificate at Moraine Valley is designed to be completed in about three semesters.

This program prepares students for employment in the welding field. Students gain experience in SMAW (stick), gas metal arc welding (mig), gas tungsten arc welding (tig), brazing, braze welding, oxy fuel and plasma cutting. Metallurgy, welding print interpretation, electrical welding circuits and related safety procedures also are covered. Advanced training in pipe welding using the shielded metal arc process or advanced training in industrial problems are offered as options for this certificate.

Employment Outlook

Despite limited employment growth, about 45,600 openings for welders, cutters, solderers and brazers are projected each year, on average, over the decade

Employment of welders, cutters, solderers and brazers is projected to grow 2% from 2021 to 2031, about as fast as the average for all occupations. The nation鈥檚 aging infrastructure will require the expertise of welders, cutters, solderers and brazers to help rebuild bridges, highways and buildings.

This certificate program prepares the student for a beginning career as a heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanic, installer, or service representative. Get started in the workforce in as few as two semesters by earning this stackable certificate.

Stackable certificates allow you to earn additional certificates by taking a few additional credits and give you the freedom to begin your career while continuing to advance your options. Make yourself more marketable to future employers by earning the next certificate in the HAC series. The Heating and Air Conditioning Certificate can be completed by taking one additional semester.

This program combines both lecture and hands-on components for commercial heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration maintenance and installation training. The certificate will serve students who are currently in the field and can demonstrate advanced proficiency or those students who have completed the courses necessary for the Advanced Air Conditioning Tech Certificate. The Commercial Systems courses deliver advanced content that is not appropriate for students who have not had the initial training on residential equipment. Students will be trained on commercial equipment and will use advanced digital controls like those found in large commercial buildings or multi-building campuses.

The Electrical Trouble Shooting Certificate consists of four courses and can be completed in one semester or taken over two semesters.

This Electrical Trouble Shooting Certificate is automatically earned after completing these three certificates:

  • Basic Air Conditioning Technician Certificate
  • Heating and Air Conditioning Certificate
  • Advanced Air Conditioning Certificate

The Heating and Air Conditioning Certificate offers additional skills to individuals who have completed the Basic Air Conditioning Technician Certificate or currently work in the field as an air conditioning technician. This certificate can be completed in one semester.
