Start Your Career in Addiction Counseling and Prevention
Substance abuse, behavioral disorder and mental health counselors advise people on a range of issues, such as those relating to alcoholism, addictions or depression.
The primary goal of this program is to give you an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue and become a certified addictions counselor in Illinois through the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Professional Certification Association (IAODAPCA)/Illinois Certification Board (ICB).
An addiction counselor鈥檚 professional training and levels of clinical experience vary. Addiction counselors provide alcohol and drug counseling and education by performing key functions, which may include the following:
- Individual Counseling
- Group Counseling
- Intakes and Assessments
- Client Education
- Referrals
- Case Management
- Record Keeping
NEW CLASS! Starting fall 2025, the Addiction Studies Program is offering a new course, Neuroscience (ADC-203), where students will explore how alcohol, drugs and traumatic experiences impact the brain and body. The course also highlights restorative and preventative strategies, including trauma-informed care and essential self-care practices for counselors and other health care professionals.
The Addictions Studies A.A.S. program at Moraine Valley is designed to be completed in about two years.
The Associate in Applied Science degree in Addictions Studies typically takes about two years to complete when attending full time.
This program is designed to prepare you for certification as an addiction counselor in Illinois. Graduates are eligible to take the Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Counselor (CADC) exam through the Illinois Certification Board (ICB).
In most cases, certification requires two years of work experience. However, by completing this degree, that requirement is waived. This means you can take the certification exam immediately after graduation and begin your career sooner.
