Radiologic technologists use medical imaging equipment to take images of bones, tissue, organs and vessels. You will perform diagnostic imaging procedures, such as X-ray examinations. Additionally, part of the job includes explaining the procedure, positioning both the patient and the machine properly and employing protection devices so that only the portion of the body requiring the X-ray is exposed to radiation. Technologists are responsible for controlling the equipment so that radiographs are of the correct contrast, detail and density.

An A.A.S. in Radiologic Technology prepares you for a career using medical imaging to help diagnose and treat patients.

Radiologic technologists work directly with patients while operating imaging equipment and supporting physicians in clinical settings. Most graduates work in hospitals, outpatient imaging centers and specialty clinics. You may also find opportunities in physician’s offices, urgent care centers and mobile imaging services.

With experience and additional certifications, you can expand into advanced imaging areas such as CT, MRI, mammography or interventional radiology.

The Computed Tomography Certificate Program at Moraine Valley is designed to be completed in two years.

The Radiologic Technology A.A.S. degree typically can be completed in about two years when attending full time. Your timeline may vary based on your schedule and course load. Throughout the program, you鈥檒l learn radiologic imaging techniques, patient positioning and safety practices while gaining progressive clinical experience in real health care settings.

This hands-on training prepares you for entry-level roles in hospitals, clinics and medical offices.

The Radiologic Technology A.A.S. Program has special admission requirements and limited enrollment. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all admission requirements are met and all documents and scores are submitted on time. Only complete application files will be reviewed for admission.

Documents to be Submitted for a Complete File

  • Moraine Valley application for admission, if not currently enrolled in college credit courses at Moraine Valley
  • A completed Radiologic Technology Admission Application with all required documentation must be submitted to the Records Department in Building S, Room S111 by the application deadline on January 31
  • Submit an officially sealed documentation of completion date from high school or GED records/transcripts. This must be submitted to the Records Department in Building S, Room S111 by the application deadline on January 31
  • Official sealed college transcripts (if applicable)
  • Copy of Illinois-issued state ID. Qualified residents of the district and residents of districts engaged in cooperative agreements are given priority over out-of-district students for program admission
  • Complete application with all required documentation attached and submitted to the Records Department in Building S, Room S111 by the application deadline on January 31

Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Must be at least 18 years old to be accepted.

Minimum Academic Requirements

  • Completion of one year of high school biology with a lab or one semester of college biology with a lab with a grade of 鈥淐鈥 or above.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.0 is required for all courses (general education and career) related to the Radiologic Technology Program.
  • 颅颅颅颅Math requirement is met by one of the following:
    • Qualify for MTH109 through completion of Moraine Valley鈥檚 placement test
    • ACT score in Math of 20 or higher OR SAT score of 520 or higher
    • Completion of MTH095 or MTH096 with a grade of 鈥淐鈥 or higher at Moraine Valley
    • Previous college level math credit with a grade of 鈥淒鈥 or higher
  • English requirement is met by one of the following:
    • Test into college level for English and Reading determined by Moraine Valley placement test
    • ACT score in English and Reading of 20 or higher OR SAT score of 480 or higher
    • Completion of all developmental levels in both English and Reading at Moraine Valley
    • Previous college-level English composition credit with a grade of 鈥淐鈥 or higher

好色先生 Notification of Clinical Health Requirements
好色先生 partners with health care facilities to provide clinical experiences for its students. These facilities prescribe various health requirements for all students who are placed at their clinical sites. Students who intend on participating in the clinical component of any program must submit documentation reflecting their compliance with the following clinical health requirements[1] prior to the deadline established by their program of study.

  1. Measles (Rubeola) Titer
  2. Mumps Titer
  3. Rubella Titer
  4. Varicella (Chicken Pox) Titer
  5. Hepatitis B Titer
  6. 2-step TB skin test or QuantiFERON-TB Gold Blood Test annually
  7. Tdap Vaccine every 10 years
  8. Influenza (Flu) Vaccine annually
  9. COVID-19 Full Vaccination
  10. Physical Exam by health care professional
  11. American Heart Association BLS CPR for health care professionals every 2 years
  12. Background check
  13. Drug screen
  14. Medical health insurance 鈥 upload card annually

Unless otherwise indicated in writing by a student’s assigned clinical site, all of the above health requirements must be met before a student may participate in a clinical rotation.

A student who fails to timely submit documentation by set compliance deadlines reflecting compliance with the clinical health requirements listed above may be unable to participate in the required clinical component of their program in a timely manner, and their graduation may be delayed. The college cannot guarantee clinical placements for students who fail to satisfy all clinical health requirements by the set compliance deadlines.

The drug screening and background check is provided by Castle Branch along with Compliance Tracker/Immunization verification for incoming and current Radiologic Technology students. Deadline dates for completion of criminal background checks will be announced by program coordinators during program orientation.

[1] Provided list of clinical health requirements is subject to change based upon the policies of the clinical facilities. Students will be notified, in writing, of any modifications to the list of clinical health requirements.

Clinical Rotations
Students will rotate through a variety of clinical settings to ensure timely and appropriate clinical experience. Students may remain in the same hospital for two semesters (i.e. fall, spring or summer) of clinical education and will complete rotations at hospitals/clinics during their five semesters in the program. Assignments are based upon experiences needed before graduation. Students will be informed of their next assignment prior to the end of the preceding semester. If an affiliate experiences significant attrition or if other problems arise, the clinical coordinator may move students among affiliates at any time.

Students will have access to clinical settings which provide a wide range of procedures for competency achievement, including mobile, surgical and trauma examinations.

Students must be willing and able to travel to any clinical site that they are assigned to. Starting time may be as early as 7 a.m. The afternoon shift might end no later than 10 p.m. Shifts are scheduled for eight hours and will not exceed 10 hours per day.

Technical Standards
All students must be able to perform the essential functions of the curriculum. In addition to the general admission criteria above, radiography students must be able to:

  • Lift more than 30 pounds routinely
  • Work with the arms above the head routinely
  • Push, pull, bend and stoop and kneel and squat routinely
  • Work standing on their feet for the majority of the day
  • Help patients on and off the X-ray equipment from wheelchairs or carts
  • Write and speak to patients and staff effectively
  • See image details clearly

Selection Criteria
Applicants for the program will be considered in the following order:

  1. Qualified residents of the district and residents of districts engaged in cooperative agreements who submit a Radiologic Technology application by January 31 of the year they plan to enroll in the program
  2. Qualified nonresidents who submit a Radiologic Technology application by January 31
  3. On a space available basis, applicants who do not meet all of the admissions requirements or the deadline may be considered after January 31. Weighted Point System based on two factors:
    • Program-specific courses GPA (courses required in the A.A.S. Radiologic Technology degree)
    • Success Course grades listed below

Point criteria are assigned values in accordance with the chart below. Students also are required to meet the current minimum standards for admission.

Ties will be broken based on 1) Overall GPA 2) Date and time of application submission.

Success Courses
(BIO, MTH and MRT-110 courses must have been completed no longer than five years prior. If these courses are over five years old, no points will be earned. ACT/SAT scores must be no older than 18 months from the test date to meet academic requirements by the application deadline.

Examples

  • Student has BIO-180 with an A鈥3 points X 4 credit hours = 12 points
  • Student has BIO-181 with a A – 3 points X 4 credit hours = 12 points
  • Student has MTH-109 with a B鈥2 points X 2 credit hours = 4 points
  • Student has MRT-110 with a B鈥2 points X 3 credit hours = 6 points
  • Total points for success courses = 12 for BIO-180 + 12 for BIO 181+ 4 for MTH-109 + 6 for MRT-110 = 34 points
  • Student has program specific GPA of 3.65 = 13 points
  • Student would earn 47 points towards getting accepted into the program

Re-Application
Re-applicants must complete a new Radiologic Technology Admission Application and submit it to the 好色先生 and Records Office before January 31. (Acceptance letters sent one month after close of application deadline).

Program Mission
The mission of the Radiologic Technology Program at 好色先生 is to provide a stimulating intellectual environment that will provide our students with guided experiences in the study and clinical practice of radiography.

We believe that learning is the interaction between the learner and his/her environment leading to changes or modifications of behavior that are relatively permanent. We further believe it is necessary to prepare students to provide quality patient care. These beliefs will be realized through our commitment to the education of radiographers in the Moraine Valley community.

The Radiologic Technology Program strives:

Goal: To expose students to professional organizations in an attempt to promote a lifelong desire to achieve professional excellence.

3.5 Students must pass Composition I and Speech Fundamentals with a 鈥淐鈥 or better.
