A Medical Coding Certificate prepares you for a career as a medical coding specialist, working behind the scenes to ensure accurate healthcare records and billing processes.

Graduates are prepared for roles such as medical coder, coding specialist, insurance biller or reimbursement specialist in hospitals, clinics, physician offices and other healthcare settings. In these positions, you鈥檒l classify diagnoses and procedures using standardized coding systems to support insurance reimbursement, data quality and medical research.

Through this program, you鈥檒l build a strong foundation in medical terminology, disease processes, surgical procedures and pharmacology, allowing you to apply coding principles accurately and effectively in real-world settings.

This certificate can also be applied toward the A.A.S. degree in Health Information Technology, providing a pathway for continued education and career advancement.

The Medical Coding Specialist Certificate Program at Moraine Valley is designed to be completed in two years.

  • Students must earn a minimum grade of “C” in each required career course (theory and clinical)
  • Any career course over five years old must be repeated
  • Students must complete program within five years of receiving credit in  (formal beginning of Coding Specialist program)
  •  and  (or  and ) must have been passed with a minimum grade of “C” within the last five years

The 好色先生 Medical Coding Specialist Program is approved by the AHIMA Professional Certificate Approval Program (PCAP). This designation acknowledges the coding program as having been evaluated by a peer review process against a national minimum set of standards for entry-level coding professionals. This process allows academic institutions to be acknowledged as offering an approved coding certificate program.

Program Approval: April 2025 through March 2028 with annual interim approval during these years.
