The Flute Choir will perform its concert on Friday, Oct. 30, 7:30 p.m., in the John and Angeline Oremus Theater.

The Orchestra belatedly will celebrate the 250^th anniversary of the U.S. on Sunday, Nov. 22, 3 p.m. The group will perform pieces by American composers including John Philip Sousa, Florence Price and John Williams, among others.

At Moraine Valley, students can earn an EMT certificate required to work on an ambulance and an Emergency Medical Services (Paramedic) certificate providing more advanced training. With an EMT license, anyone can apply for the college鈥檚 Fire Academy, a competitive 10-week program running full days, Monday through Friday. The academy comprises 16 students per cohort and has expanded to being offered twice during each semester. This fall, the program also offered some courses it had not provided in years, including a fire officer training class and another for building inspectors in training.

The college has a garage for an ambulance, trailer, fire engine and fire truck; however, the program faces challenges in expanding to meet student demand and community need. In fact, some of the hands-on training requires moving the vehicles out of the garage to make more room.

鈥淥nce students are in this competitive program and start the academy, there鈥檚 less than a 1% washout rate. Between EMS, fire and paramedic training, they can do all those pieces under the same roof at Moraine Valley,鈥� Hufnagl emphasized. 鈥淲e鈥檝e had a number of students go through our program, get hired in a fire department full time and then come back here and teach with us, which they鈥檙e so excited to do.鈥�

In addition to scholarship opportunities for students in these programs, Moraine Valley鈥檚 Fire Academy has agreements with 13 fire departments in the area, which allows students smooth transitions to internships.

When Martina Pereyra, of Bedford Park, was looking into potential careers, she contacted local fire departments to ask how to enter the field. All of them recommended Moraine Valley鈥檚 program. Before graduating in 2024, she worked through the academy and had an internship at the Roberts Park Fire Protection District, where she now works as a firefighter paramedic.

鈥淲e had a ton of hands-on training at Moraine Valley, and it helped me out tremendously,鈥� Pereyra explained. 鈥淎 lot of what Moraine Valley teaches you is similar to what鈥檚 out there, and the college truly prepares you for what it鈥檚 like in the field. The intensity of the training is almost the same as it is working in real life.鈥�

When Moraine Valley Fire Academy graduates are hired, they just 鈥減lug-and-play鈥� what they learned, according to Andy Hufnagl, Emergency Medical Services/Fire Science coordinator. In an ever-growing field, that type of training benefits students, fire departments and communities alike.

鈥淔ire service and EMS are constantly evolving. When I went through school, we had heavy steel bottles 鈥� now they are ergonomically designed. There鈥檚 higher technology equipment; you can scan for people and find them inside buildings. Drones and all the technology have vastly improved,鈥� Hufnagl said. 鈥淭he realistic hands-on training we can provide students through numerous instructors with numerous backgrounds and experience help students get what it鈥檚 like to work in the fire service and learn different ways of doing things. Our program is a phenomenal way for people who wish to give back to the community to help fellow citizens in their worst time of need, and, as a benefit, it pays well with great benefits and is AI proof 鈥� you don鈥檛 have to worry about losing your job.鈥�

Pereyra is grateful for Moraine Valley鈥檚 instructors and the hands-on learning that equipped her for a job she loves. 鈥淚 chose Moraine Valley鈥檚 Fire Academy because I wanted a program that truly prepared me for what the real job was going to be like,鈥� she said. 鈥淢oraine Valley did an exceptional job for me and my peers with the instructors, the classes we had to take and the discipline we had to learn every single day.鈥�

Crawley died on May 30, 2026. The college鈥檚 fourth president, he led the college from 1991 to 2012, when he retired from higher education.

鈥淥ur Automotive Technology Program prepares students as entry-level technicians at automotive repair facilities and dealerships,鈥� said Ira Siegel, professor and Automotive Technology Program coordinator. 鈥淲e offer short course certificates that take as little as one semester to complete and a two-year program that鈥檚 offered as a certificate or an associate degree.鈥�

A program like Automotive Technology is helping fill a growing employment gap in the automotive industry. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are over for automotive service technicians and mechanics projected each year, on average, through 2035. Several factors, including an exiting labor force, the number of vehicles on the road and advancements in automotive technology, are increasing the need for more trained technicians.

Siegel has bolstered the program with industry standard diagnostic equipment, training aids and gas, hybrid and electric vehicles. Siegel also helped create the Mopar Career Automotive Program (Mopar CAP), which provides valuable internship experience and manufacturer-specific training for students. Moraine Valley is the only institution in Illinois to offer this program.

鈥淲hen I started at Moraine Valley in 2002, we only had one lab and eight vehicles in our fleet. Today, we now have two big labs and 57 vehicles,鈥� shared Siegel. 鈥淲e鈥檙e currently offering as many as three automotive classes at a given time. If we had more lab space, we could offer additional classes.鈥�

For Siegel, creating a strong Automotive Technology Program is a service to the community. As manufacturers incorporate more advanced systems, communities need trained, reliable technicians who can diagnose and repair their vehicles.

鈥淚n addition to keeping pace with updated technologies, our instructors know there is no replacement for human judgment, hands-on lab training with real vehicles and person-to-person communication of system issues 鈥� qualities that cannot be replaced with AI,鈥� continued Siegel. 鈥淲hile AI can enhance the diagnostic process, it can’t replace the technicians actually making the repairs.”

Participants can walk or run the chip-timed 5K (3.1 mile) path throughout campus. The Kid鈥檚 Dash starts at 10:15 a.m. for children 3 to 12 years old. All pre-registered participants will receive a T-shirt. Costumes are encouraged, and awards for individual and group costumes will be given. Prizes will be awarded to top race finishers in each age category.

Runners and walkers can register their children for the Little Pumpkins Patch, a free activity area open during and after the race and supervised by trained staff.

Registration is $35 for community members/alumni and $25 for Moraine Valley students/employees. The Kid鈥檚 Dash is $10. Prices increase by $5 on Aug. 31, an additional $5 on Oct. 1 and $5 more on race day. Anyone registering a child for the Little Pumpkins Patch must be signed up for the race.

Until last season, the Cyclones had not secured a region crown since 2017, doing so with eight of their 10 runners earning All-Region honors.

鈥淗aving won regionals last year with seven runners back and six of them were All-Regions, that alone set the expectations high ever since last season,鈥� said Head Coach Dimitri Dimizas in his 11^th season leading the men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 cross country programs. 鈥淎ny success will come from the sophomores, which they know. The freshmen know what鈥檚 expected, however. I want them to learn as much as possible to help us reach our goals.鈥�

This fall, the Cyclones want to earn a second consecutive region championship 鈥� something not yet accomplished in the men鈥檚 program 鈥� and place higher at the national tournament. Among the All-Region runners returning are Matthew Busch (Stagg), Angelo Esparza (Argo), Andrew Leon (Oak Lawn), Juan Macias (Oak Lawn), Gavin Rybicki (Oak Lawn) and David Santiago (Bremen). Jacob Silva (Argo) also is back and aiming to become an All-Region runner.

Rybicki took ownership of the offseason, making big strides in his speed. 鈥淕avin has separated himself. He improved more than any runner I can remember having,鈥� Dimizas said. 鈥淗e outworked everyone, and I鈥檓 excited to see how it鈥檒l pay off, which is new territory for him. He has big goals.鈥�

Santiago will be a solid No. 2 runner, having added some new tactics to his offseason training. 鈥淗e understands the sport more than anyone else,鈥� Dimizas commented. 鈥淗e鈥檚 a student of the game and wants to be a coach.鈥�

Busch and Silva both want to be All-Region runners this season, having put in some good work this summer. Leon and Esparza were the top runners last season, and once the racing season begins, expectations will be higher for them. Macias has struggled with injuries but still aims to be one of the top seven runners and qualify for nationals.

The freshmen include Aiden Maderak (Stagg), Dylan Lovelace (Lyons Township), Miguel Dimaculangan (Philippines) and Shawn Mallo (Richards). Mallo is the fastest incoming freshman while Maderak and Lovelace come from top high school running programs. Dimaculangan ran track in the Philippines but is making his cross country debut and already doing well in preseason training.

鈥淭he goal is still to make it to nationals, and the sophomores know the expectations,鈥� Dimizas said. 鈥淣ow that we are practicing every day, they will really improve collectively.鈥�
