The Moraine Valley Orchestra will play Shakespearean-inspired music prior to the performance of the Bard鈥檚 play, 鈥淩ichard III,鈥� on Saturday, July 18, 6 p.m., outside at the Gateway between the FPAC and Building M.

The Jazz Ensemble will perform a collection of swinging tunes in 鈥淪ummer Sunsets and Sizzlin鈥� Swing!鈥� on Thursday, July 23, 7:30 p.m.

“Students in our Career Programs are using fewer typical classroom supplies and more on-the-job tools. While this prepares students for the working environment right away, they often bear the financial burden upfront, which can make students hesitant to pursue these programs,” said Patti Mehallick, director of Alumni and Annual Programs for the Foundation. “Donations like this help students surmount the costs of the program and give them confidence to succeed.”

Devoted to supporting children in the local community, the Orland Park Kiwanis Club is a volunteer service group that organizes multiple fundraising initiatives in the area. In addition to funding scholarships, the Orland Park Kiwanis Club supports the Crisis Center for the South Suburbs, Ronald McDonald House Charities, the VIP Service Dog Foundation, Habitat for Humanity and more.

Over the past eight years, the Orland Park Kiwanis Club has provided similar donations to the Foundation, helping more than 100 students through scholarships. This donation will fund scholarships for 28 Career Programs students beginning in the fall 2026 and spring 2027 semesters.

The golf season culminated its first half in October with a third place finish in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference after some fierce competition. It all came down to the final match when the Cyclones missed second place by less than one stroke. Freshman Joey Charleston (Chicago Christian) finished as the No. 8 golfer in conference with a 77 average while sophomore Matthew Pawyza (Lockport) was No. 10, averaging 79.75.

After a few months away from any tournaments, the Cyclones reconvened in April for the Melee in Morris and finished sixth. Freshman Rory Moran (Lincoln-Way East) tied for third place overall out of 66 golfers after scoring a season-low of 72. Roughly a week later, the Cyclones spent three days at the PrairieView Golf Club in Byron, Ill., for the NJCAA Region 4 Golf Championship, where they took 10^th in a contentious field to end the season. Rainy and windy weather pushed scores higher than usual, but the Cyclones were able to steadily improve their performance.

鈥淥ur team score improved every day, which wasn鈥檛 too bad considering none of the guys ever played on that course before the tournament,鈥� said Head Coach Matt Lovelace, who concluded his 10^th season leading the program.

The Cyclones were led by lone sophomore, Pawyza, and boasted a talented roster with reliable swings and steady skills. The players consistently improved and faced tough competition during every match, but they continually discovered different routes to success.

鈥淭he golf season went fairly well, overall,鈥� Lovelace noted. 鈥淲e felt we could have finished stronger, but golf can be an unpredictable game at times.鈥�

Unlike some past squads, the Cyclones expect more players to return than usual, including Dominick Rallo (Hinsdale South), Anderson Miz (Stagg), Fionn Gormley (Tinley Park), Tayler Schade (Oak Forest) and Moran. They also have two new players joining the team 鈥� one from Lincoln-Way and another from Argo high schools. Each should be a strong addition to the squad and make an immediate impact.

鈥淲ith our returning experience and incoming talent, we鈥檙e in a great position and should be looking very strong heading into the fall season,鈥� Lovelace added.

Each year, the Hall of Fame recognizes four alumni who have made an impact in their professional and personal lives. Inductees are selected by the Hall of Fame selection committee comprising college faculty, staff and alumni. Awardees will be notified by Oct. 31.

Nominations can be made by anyone; however, individuals may not nominate themselves. Nominees must have attended 好色先生 10 or more years ago and received a degree or certificate or completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at the college. 鈥淢oraine Valley is honored to have been selected as a beneficiary of this golf outing honoring a great man, chef and restaurateur,鈥� said Kristy McGreal, executive director of the 好色先生 Foundation.

The golf outing will honor Patrick Concannon, owner and chef of Osteria Ottimo and Mama Maria鈥檚 Restaurant in Orland Park, who passed away in 2025. He began his culinary career in 1984, working in fine dining kitchens in Chicago, Hawaii, France and California. In 1990, he moved back to Chicago as a sous chef and established himself as an innovator of modern Mexican cuisine, and was selected among a few local chefs to cook at the U.S. Open held at Olympia Fields Country Club in 2003. In 2008, he opened Osteria Ottimo, a small Italian eatery specializing in simple rustic Italian dishes. Five years later, he opened Mama Maria鈥檚 Taco and Tequila Bar.

To honor Concannon鈥檚 passion and work ethic, the Patrick Concannon Young Chef鈥檚 Scholarship Fund (PCYCSF) was created to help ensure young culinary arts students can finish their studies. The purpose of PCYCSF is to remove financial barriers and support the next generation of bakers and chefs.

鈥淎nyone who knew Patrick understands that he would be bothered if a student had to leave their passion because they couldn鈥檛 afford it,鈥� said Jory Carrick, a representative from the Patrick鈥檚 Putts and Pans golf outing. 鈥淧roceeds from PCYCSF will allow culinary students in need to pursue their passion with the same spirit and vigor Patrick had.鈥�

Moraine Valley鈥檚 Culinary Arts programs train students for careers in a variety of settings, including restaurants, hotels, catering companies, hospitals, corporate environments and more. Faculty members bring real-world experiences, and students learn in immersive, professional-grade kitchens. Students in Culinary Arts can earn associate degrees and certificates in specialized areas.

鈥淭his generous donation from PCYCSF will help many culinary arts students overcome their financial obstacles so they can dedicate focus to their craft, the same way Patrick did,鈥� McGreal shared. 鈥淧atrick鈥檚 impact will fuel generations of Culinary Arts students at Moraine Valley.鈥�

Naheda Zayyad, a prosecutor with the Cook County State鈥檚 Attorney鈥檚 Office and a member of the board of directors for the MBA of Chicago, noted she nominated Shoman-Dajani because of her profound impact in the community.

鈥淣ina has a plethora of work in the educational field, but more so she has been a mentor to people in the Arab American community for as long as I can remember. I can鈥檛 think of one person who has made contact with Nina who doesn鈥檛 have a kind word to say about her,鈥� Zayyad said. 鈥淪he has advocated very strongly as an educator, as a mentor and has done a lot of community engagement, not just with the students but professionals in the community. She is such a leader, and this award is well deserved.鈥�

Shoman-Dajani鈥檚 community work includes serving as executive director of the Chicago Palestine Film Festival and previously on boards for a refugee resettlement organization and the Association of Arab American Studies. She has published reports on the Arab American Muslim community, conducted research on Arab American college students and served on scholarship committees at the mosque in Orland Park.

She began her tenure at Moraine Valley 16 years ago as an English Language Learner specialist, before becoming coordinator of English as a Second Language (ESL) Instruction, Curriculum and Transition, and then manager of Transition and ESL. Her professional experience also includes several years as an adjunct instructor at Moraine Valley, Saint Xavier University and the University of Illinois Chicago. In addition, Shoman-Dajani was the recipient of Moraine Valley鈥檚 听2025 Dr. Vernon O. Crawley Leadership Award, recognizing her excellence in leadership.

Sara Suleiman, MBA of Chicago president, called Shoman-Dajani 鈥渁n inspiration to all鈥� whose outstanding achievements and contributions to the community have not gone unnoticed. She noted that the award is a testament to Shoman-Dajani鈥檚 exceptional skills and positive impact on the community.

鈥淥n behalf of the Moraine Valley community, I extend our deepest sympathies to his family, especially his wife, Mrs. Betty Crawley, who has graciously represented Dr. Crawley at many important college events over the years,鈥� said Dr. Pamela J. Haney, college president. 鈥淲e will continue to keep them in our thoughts during this difficult time.鈥�

Crawley鈥檚 legacy is woven into the fabric of Moraine Valley. During his tenure as president, his visionary leadership transformed the college. He led the successful passage of an $89 million capital bond referendum that expanded the campus from the last temporary trailers to the sprawling grounds that exist today. In 2009, the college named its Vernon O. Crawley Science Hall after him. He also oversaw the opening of the college鈥檚 two extension centers in Blue Island and Tinley Park, and in the last 10 years of his presidency, guided the college to a 25% enrollment growth. His focus on student success continues to shape the experiences of students, faculty, staff and the community.

His commitment to excellence elevated Moraine Valley鈥檚 reputation on the national stage and positioned the institution as a leader in higher education. He served on the board of several noted national organizations, as well as state and local organizations, and was the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout his 21-year presidency. In 2012, Moraine Valley created the Vernon O. Crawley Leadership Award in his honor to recognize staff who demonstrate his shared leadership qualities.

鈥淒r. Crawley鈥檚 lasting contributions continue to guide and inspire our work today. While his accomplishments as president were remarkable, those who knew him also will remember his integrity, wisdom and unwavering dedication to students and education,鈥� Haney said. 鈥淭he loss of Dr. Crawley will be deeply felt throughout our campus community.鈥�

Crawley is survived by his wife, Betty Wood Crawley; three children Alan, Vonda and Keith; and three grandchildren, Joshua, Julian and Jason.

Visitation for Crawley will be Thursday, June 11, from 3 to 9 p.m. at the Robert J. Sheehy & Son鈥檚 Funeral Home, 9000 151^st St. in Orland Park. The funeral will be Friday, June 12, at Christ Church Oak Brook, 501 Oak Brook Road. He will lie in state at 10 a.m., and the service will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will be private. His obituary can be viewed on the .

Moraine Valley also plans to host a memorial service for Crawley on its campus in the fall.

鈥淥verall, I am happy we did better than last year and improved in the conference standings,鈥� said Head Coach Nick Karczynski, who finished his second season leading the program. 鈥淭he team was well put together. They had more of a team dynamic, communicated and were eager to work.鈥�

The Cyclones finished 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference for third place 鈥� two spots higher than last year. They took fourth place in the NJCAA Region 4 Tournament. Big wins included a shutout of Waubonsee Community College and 5-4 victories over McHenry County and Elgin Community colleges.

Freshmen Malachi Soto (Brother Rice) and Zachary DeMarco (Lockport) as well as the No. 3 doubles team, sophomore Dylan Roberts (Andrew) and DeMarco, advanced to the third place matches at regionals to end their seasons.

鈥淢aking it through the first round was wonderful. They played well all around. It was good to see them move forward at regionals,鈥� Karczynski noted.

At No. 6 singles, DeMarco posted the best record prior to regionals (8-2) earning a high seed. 鈥淗e enjoyed playing and was focused and locked into his matches,鈥� Karczynski said. 鈥淗e was stoic in the zone.鈥�

DeMarco and Soto played into several third-set tiebreakers this season, with Soto boasting an abnormally high 17-15 score in one singles match.

Roberts competed at No. 5 singles and always fought hard to win. He and DeMarco never gave up in any doubles match. 鈥淭hey always tried hard and they really wanted to win, you could see that,鈥� Karczynski commented.

At No. 2 singles, freshman JoNick Coleman (Homewood-Flossmoor) was persistent on the court. 鈥淗e won a decent number of matches and should do even better next season,鈥� Karczynski said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 very motivated.鈥�

In addition to Roberts, the Cyclones bid farewell to sophomores Erik Astranskas (Stagg) and Zack Johnson (Beecher), but Karczynski encouraged them to continue playing tennis in some capacity.

鈥淚 encourage the players to have healthy habits and continue playing after college. I also encourage them to train and condition all year,鈥� he said.

All the team鈥檚 freshmen are expected to return, and Karczynski looks forward to welcoming incoming freshmen, who hopefully will provide another boost next season.

Right from the start, the Cyclones posted impressive victories paired with narrow losses. They boasted a five-game win streak and ended the season with a tight 5-4 loss in the region playoffs. The team batting average was .331 with a .389 on-base percentage and 20 home runs. Overall, the Cyclones finished 26-19 and 11-3 in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference for second place.

鈥淭his was a talented group. When the Moraine Valley bats got hot, we were a team that couldn鈥檛 be beat. I was told we were one of the scariest region-seeded teams because of our bats and depth of our pitching,鈥� said first-year Assistant Coach Megan Quinn, who temporarily took over for Head Coach Ari Bulthuis, who was on maternity leave.

Several players contributed to the squad鈥檚 success. Sophomore infielder and pitcher Brooklynn Sedlak (Shepard) had quite a season, batting .368 with 37 RBIs, 37 runs, 53 hits, 11 doubles, five triples and two home runs. On the mound, she threw a 4.37, collecting 51 strikeouts. She earned All-Conference first team infield and All-region third team honors. Her sister, freshman outfielder Londynn Sedlak (Shepard), led the offense with a .421 batting average with 24 RBIs, 35 runs, 53 hits, seven doubles, three triples and three home runs. She earned All-Conference first team outfield and All-region second team honors. 鈥淭hose two are phenomenal athletes. They are consistent with the bat on the ball,鈥� Quinn noted.

Also making an impact this spring were sophomore infielder Keira Clancy (Oak Forest), who was All-Conference first team infield; sophomore outfielder Jill Zodrow (Lockport), All-Conference first team outfield; freshman pitcher/infielder Haley Tracy (Sandburg), All-Conference second team pitcher; and sophomore catcher Estelle Loth (Sandburg), All-Conference honorable mention. Loth and Tracy also collected monster stats at the plate. Loth averaged .410 with 31 RBIs, 27 runs, 15 doubles and four home runs while Tracy averaged .385 with 38 RBIs, 23 runs, 13 doubles and four home runs. Tracy also earned a 3.36 ERA with 36 strikeouts and a 4-3 record on the mound.

鈥淛ill was the 鈥榥o fly-zone queen鈥� because anything in the air, she was going to catch. Haley had a solid bat, and Essie dependably caught almost every game,鈥� Quinn said. 鈥淥ur one through nine lineup was reliable. It was such a strong group.鈥�

Although the Cyclones narrowly fell to an always tough Kankakee Community College in the region playoffs, they stole one game from the Cavaliers earlier in the season, which they hadn鈥檛 accomplished in a few years. They also had a massive victory over a strong Triton College and just missed out on earning a conference championship.

鈥淭hey never quit or gave up. I preached to chip away every inning and to win the inning. Just play inning to inning. We were never out of games,鈥� Quinn explained. 鈥淲e had great defense and pitching. They went through a lot, and I鈥檓 proud of them. They always found a way to come back. They were workhorses.鈥�

Despite the core of sophomores graduating and transferring, most of the team鈥檚 freshmen are expected to return. Meanwhile, coaches are focusing heavily on recruiting with the hopes of building on the spring鈥檚 success.

In its second year, Moraine Valley鈥檚 President for a Day allowed one student to swap roles with college President Dr. Pamela J. Haney.

鈥淚t was a meaningful and successful experience,鈥� Haney recalled. 鈥淚 think it was more interactive this second time. I was involved in more student group interactions, and I edited some articles for The Glacier like Karolina would do. Students engaged with me as if I were a student; they weren鈥檛 intimidated. I think I just blended in.鈥�

While Haney went to class, rehearsed with the Speech and Debate Team and worked at the college鈥檚 fitness center, Granda, of Palos Hills, attended various meetings with different departments, including the Moraine Valley Foundation and Student Life, and met with international students.

鈥淚t was lower-level than what she actually does, but I still went to legit meetings, where they talked about different issues,鈥� Granda explained. 鈥淭hey told me what Dr. Haney does and how she works with local politicians, which I didn鈥檛 know. They said people are constantly in her office and that she attends events. The mental capacity for that all day is crazy. There were so many meetings, and the ones I thought I could have a say in were interesting. I made some suggestions. It was interesting to give my input that may be taken into consideration.鈥�

Last year was the first time President for a Day was implemented at the college, and Haney is eager to maintain it.

鈥淚 hope to continue gaining insight into the student experience so we can make informed decisions that truly support their success. Experiences like this are incredibly valuable, and I do see this as something worth continuing on a regular basis,鈥� she noted. 鈥淭he day really highlights the importance of flexibility and support services for students and how much students balance.鈥�

Granda, who graduated in May, wants to major in communications and pre-law. She encouraged other students to view a different side of campus.

鈥淚t鈥檚 such a cool idea to put yourself in the student鈥檚 shoes,鈥� Granda said. 鈥淪tudents should apply next year and participate, if they can. I think just the experience 鈥� you get to say what you鈥檇 want to see change at Moraine Valley and make an impact and reflect 鈥� is amazing.鈥�
