Please review the different ways Moraine Valley assists students in obtaining college credit for knowledge and skills attained outside of the classroom.  Credit may be awarded through standardized exams, institutional assessment, professional training, industry certification or licensure.  Save money and attain a degree or certificate more quickly. See if any of the following options will work for you! 

Moraine Valley awards college credit to students who participated in the  while in high school. Completion of high school AP courses alone does not award credit. Students must complete the AP exam with the required score.

CLEP can help you get the college credits you need in order to reach your educational goals more quickly.  Moraine Valley is an open test site and offers all 33 CLEP exams to both students and the community at large.

CLEP Testing

The  gives students the opportunity to earn college credit with CLEP庐 exams. Created by the College Board, this credit-by-examination program is widely accepted by colleges and universities. CLEP offers 34 exam titles covering introductory level college course material in 5 subject areas. By demonstrating proficiency on an exam, students can complete a degree or certificate requirement, earn elective credit, or meet a pre-requisite for an advanced course. Each institution sets its own CLEP policy. Be sure to determine the acceptance of CLEP exams and score requirements before signing up to take an exam.

Taking a CLEP Exam at Moraine Valley

Moraine Valley Testing Services is an open CLEP testing center, offering all 34 computerized CLEP exams to Moraine Valley students and community members. It鈥檚 located at the Palos Hills campus in Building G, Room G231. The format of most CLEP exam questions is multiple choice. The College Composition and Spanish with Writing exams require two written essays. The language exams include listening portions.

Test Day

Arrive at Testing Services (Building G, Room G231) 15 minutes prior to scheduled exam with the following items: Printed CLEP registration ticket and valid government issued photo ID ().

Do I have to be a currently enrolled student to have credit placed on a Moraine Valley transcript?
Yes. You must be currently enrolled and taking classes in the semester you are taking a CLEP exam and/or registered for the following semester at Moraine Valley Community College.

Can I take a CLEP exam for a class I have previously attempted?
No. A CLEP exam cannot be used to complete a grade of 鈥淚鈥� or 鈥淲鈥� or to repeat a course for a higher grade at Moraine Valley.

How many CLEP exams can Moraine Valley students take?
Moraine Valley students can acquire no more than 30 credit hours of CLEP to be used as equivalencies for Moraine Valley coursework toward a degree or certificate. Check with an Academic Advisor (Academic Advising, 708-974-5721, Building S, Room S201) to see if CLEP will fit into your educational plan.

How will CLEP scores transfer?
Moraine Valley students wishing to transfer their CLEP credit to other institutions need to refer to each school’s CLEP policy for accepted exams. Some schools may require scores to be sent directly for evaluation. 

Can I retake an exam?
An exam of the same title cannot be repeated within three months of the initial testing date. DANTES-funded military test takers are eligible for one funded attempt per exam title.

Modern States Education Alliance is a nonprofit organization offering free online non-credit study courses to help students prepare to take CLEP exams. The Modern States program will also reimburse exam fees and Testing Administration fees to those who complete their online CLEP exam preparation courses.  Review the  for details and requirements. 

The CLEP Official Study Guide describes each CLEP exam and provides sample test questions. It also provides information for additional study resources. It is available for checkout at the  with a student ID. Check local libraries as well.

CLEP exams are scored on a scale of 20 to 80, not 1 to 100.  Check  for more information.

The Moraine Valley Testing Center will provide an unofficial CLEP score report printout immediately after an exam.  Online score reports will be available in CLEP My Account one business day following an exam. College Composition and Spanish with Writing exam scores are available 2鈥�3 weeks after test day. Two official score reports can be sent to a designated school of choice free of charge at the time of registration.  Official score reports requested after exam day will have an additional charge.  Click  for details.

Moraine Valley Students: Remember to choose Moraine Valley as your designated recipient. The Records Office will receive an official score transcript from CLEP 10鈥�14 business days after taking an exam. The Records Office will evaluate scores and apply the credit(s) as applicable.

Testing Accommodations for a documented learning or physical disability can be requested. Refer to CLEP鈥檚 . Please contact Testing Services prior to signing up for an exam.

The Moraine Valley Testing Center is a DANTES fully funded test site.  CLEP exam and administration fees are free to eligible Military Personnel and Civilian Employees. Please review CLEP鈥檚 .

The International Baccalaureate (IB) exam assesses student work and measures students’ academic, intercultural and basic skills. Moraine Valley determines how it will apply external examinations toward credit in the program of study.

Policy

Students may be granted college credit through successful performance on International Baccalaureate exams. Students are responsible for submitting the scores to the Office of Registration and Records, Building S, Room S111. To post International Baccalaureate credits to Moraine Valley transcript, complete a Transfer Credit Evaluation Request in the 好色先生 Office, Building S, Room S101. Students must score the required score set by the appropriate department.

The Achieved Prior Learning (APL) program is designed to enable Moraine Valley students to take an assessment to obtain credit in a course.

Assessments are created by Moraine Valley Faculty and include one or more of the following: written examinations, interviews and performance tests or labs. Achieved Prior Learning (APL) gives students the opportunity to earn college credit by demonstrating knowledge attained outside of the traditional college classroom setting.

Interested students should first meet with an academic advisor to determine their degree or certificate requirements. Current list of courses for which there is an Achieved Prior Learning (APL) assessment option available can be found here.

How to Begin:

Step 1

Contact the Academic Outreach Office to determine if the course needed has an Achieved Prior Learning (APL) assessment option. Please note: A student must be currently enrolled and working toward a degree or certificate at Moraine Valley in order to receive credit. 

Step 2

Meet with designated Faculty Member or Coordinator to discuss prior experience and course assessment requirements.

Step 3

Complete an Achieved Prior Learning (APL) form and pay fee. The Achieved Prior Learning (APL) fee is $137 per course.

Prior Learning credit is available to students who are currently enrolled and pursuing a degree or certificate at Moraine Valley. Please note: Prior Learning credit can only be used to fulfill requirements in a chosen degree or certificate.

Knowledge is assessed by a faculty member in the appropriate academic or career discipline. An APL assessment may include a written examination, interview or performance test. Students are graded on a pass/fail basis. With satisfactory completion, the corresponding course credit will appear on your Moraine Valley transcript with the designation “P” (Pass) and the number of credit hours earned. Credit hours will not count toward student鈥檚 grade point average (GPA).

All requirements should be completed within the same semester student begins the Achieved Prior Learning (APL) process.

Students intending to transfer to another college or university should check with that institution regarding transfer credit policies. Credit may not be accepted as transfer credit by another college or university.

Some Degree and Certificate programs may limit the number of degree requirements which can be fulfilled with Prior Learning Credit. Check with the department and your advisor for individual program requirements.

Achieved Prior Learning (APL) is designed for those who already know the course material and cannot be used as an independent study.

  • Students must be enrolled and pursuing a degree or certificate at Moraine Valley.
  • Prior Learning (APL/PC) credit must apply toward program requirements and cannot replace a previously earned grade or be used to complete a course.
  • All assessed work must meet or exceed a 鈥淐鈥� grade level; however, no letter grade is awarded, and these credits do not count toward GPA.
  • Students must complete at least 15 credit hours at Moraine Valley; Prior Learning credit does not count toward this requirement.
  • For certificates, at least 50% of required credits must be completed at Moraine Valley. Prior Learning credit does not satisfy residency requirements. For full graduation requirements, see the Moraine Valley Academic Catalog, Graduation (p. 36).

Gain credit for knowledge you have acquired in an occupation or educational environment outside of college, or through other life experiences, related to specific Moraine Valley courses.

Moraine Valley may award college credit to students who have completed certain noncredit learning or training. Couse credit is available in the following areas:

  • Comprehensive hands-on training in professional baking labs
  • Skill development in artisan breads, pastries, cakes, and plated desserts
  • Preparation for employment in bakeries, restaurants, and hospitality operations

How to Begin:

Interested students should meet with an academic advisor to determine their degree or certificate requirements.

Step 1

Contact the Academic Outreach Office to verify prior learning or training is accepted for course credit at Moraine Valley. Please note: A student must be currently enrolled and working toward a degree or certificate at Moraine Valley in order to receive credit.

Step 2

Complete a Proficiency Credit Form and submit copies of documented training (certifications, licenses, or test results) to the Academic Outreach Office. The designated faculty member or program coordinator will then complete an evaluation.

Step 3

If approved for college credit, the fee is $25 per course.

Prior Learning Policies

Must be a current student

Students must be currently enrolled and working toward a degree/certificate at Moraine Valley. Course credit must be used to fulfill degree/certificate requirements.

Can’t be used to replace a grade

Credit cannot be used to replace a previous grade earned in a course or to complete a course.

Must meet or exceed a grade of “C”

All work assessed for prior learning must meet or exceed a grade of 鈥淐鈥�. Minimum cut scores on standardized tests are set at a 鈥淐鈥� grade level.

Hours will not count towards a student’s grade point average

No letter grade is assigned, and these hours will not count toward a student鈥檚 grade point average (GPA).
